The Brazilian government has officially cancelled the solar auction initially planned for July 27 and delayed the contest planned for October 28 to December 16. With this, this year only one date for a national solar auction is planned in Brazil.
The July 29 reserve auction will be held on September 23 but the solar portion of this auction has been cancelled, according to the Thursday Official Diary. In the first reserve auction only hydroelectric projects will be able to participate.
This years second reserve auction, which includes a category for solar PV, has been delayed until December 16. The original date for this auction was October 28. The two categories originally envisioned for this auction, wind and solar, have been maintained.
12.5 GW of solar projects have registered for this auction. The government has ensured that projects planned for the cancelled solar auction can participate in the December event.
Currently, the capacity of solar which will be awarded in the December auction is not known, however Brazilian solar association ABSolar says that it expects 2 GW of solar projects to be awarded annually in auctions, including this year.
In March of this year, the Brazilian government planned two reserve auctions for 2016: One in July and another in October. It planned for PV projects to be able to participate in both.
At the end of June, the government decided to delay the July auction, without setting a new date. However, at the Brazil Solar Power event, held in Río de Janeiro a month ago, Energy Minister Fernando Coelho Filho announced that this year one solar auction would be cancelled.
