SMA secures net metering authorization in Chile

SMA Solar Technology AG has received notice from Chile's electric and power body SEC (Superintendencia de Electricidad y Combustibles) that it is now authorized to participate in the country’s net metering program.

The authorization makes SMA the first inverter supplier to qualify for the scheme, which will enable the company to offer its Chilean clients its range of inverter options from 1 to 25 kW per inverter.

"We are happy that our inverters are the first inverters in the market to receive authorization," said SMA South America general manager Daniel Rosende. "SMA has a high experience in countries all over the world, and our products offer the most advanced technology and highest quality in the market."

Published last month, Chile's net metering program guarantees customers a fixed tariff for any surplus power injected into the grid from residential and commercial PV installations. To participate, all PV installations require the authorization of the SEC, which has approved SMA's Sunny Boy TL and Sunny Tripower TL as the first inverters to meet the requirements for PV installations up to 100 kWp.

SMA's first Chilean subsidiary was opened in 2012 and provides inverter solutions for residential, off-grid, solar diesel hybrid and utility-scale installations in the country. The company is currently involved in the shipment of its Sunny Central CP-XT central inverters to more than 100 large-scale projects across Chile.
